John Barritt Consulting was established to provide information and guidance services on recycled aggregates and related issues to aggregate producers, construction companies and environmental regulators.
John Barritt worked independently from April 2014 and retired on 30 June after 58 years in the construction materials industry.
Recycled aggregates produced from construction and demolition waste, metallurgical slags and combustion ashes total some 60 million tonnes/year meeting 30% of the UK demand for construction aggregates.
Increasing environmental regulation relating to the use of waste in construction, the achievement of ‘end of waste’, and the protection of groundwater from contamination, has resulted in stricter controls on those producing and using recycled aggregates, making it more difficult for these more sustainable resources to compete with aggregates from natural resources.
